This presentation will examine the guiding principles of trauma informed care as it relates to equine-assisted services. Ways to anticipate and recognize potential triggers that may be perceived or experienced as re-traumatizing will be discussed, and methods to respond in a trauma informed way to these triggers will be identified. We will be exploring new approaches to engage the participant in this particularly challenging element of treatment that avoid distress or mirror the common characteristics of traumatic experiences. Three take-a-ways: 1. Be able to describe the Five Guiding Principles of Trauma Informed Care. 2. Identify ways to avoid re-traumatizing the participant engaged in equine-assisted services. 3. Assimilate new approaches to engaging the participant in trauma informed equine-assisted services.
